Overview

As Owner Rep Sustainability Lead for the City of Portland, Summer Fowler — a LEED AP and WELL Faculty member — provided a strategic approach to LEED and WELL Building goals. ecoREAL's pre-design triple-bottom-line report demonstrated a value-add path to LEED Platinum and WELL Building certification through a cost-benefit analysis of each strategy across human wellness, environmental impact, and life-cycle cost. WELL synergies were tracked to negate any perception of "sick building syndrome" — without affecting the public budget that was already set. The project registered as the first WELL Building in the Pacific Northwest.

Key contributions

  • Worked directly with the City of Portland from pre-design to set goals, with a sustainability matrix showing the synergies that make WELL Building a natural by-product of good design
  • As early WELL Faculty, Summer brought the most cutting-edge resources and technologies from Delos
  • Sustainability Matrix tracking all City sustainability goals (LEED, WELL, ETO)
  • Eco-charrettes and triple-bottom-line cost-benefit analysis through human, environmental, and life-cycle cost lenses
  • Sustainable design and specification assistance
  • WELL Building feature implementation, owner reporting, and policy review
  • Historic preservation project — the first WELL municipal building at the time of registration in 2016
